Preparing Our Community for Hazardous Materials Emergencies

The Alamance County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) is a community-based organization dedicated to improving preparedness for hazardous materials emergencies and supporting a coordinated response to incidents involving hazardous substances. The Alamance County LEPC was formed in 1987 to fulfill the requirements of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) of 1986.

The LEPC brings together representatives from local government, emergency services, law enforcement, fire and rescue, emergency management, public health, industry, transportation, environmental organizations, the media, and the community. By bringing these partners together, the LEPC helps strengthen communication, planning, and coordination before an emergency occurs.

What Does the LEPC Do?

The Alamance County LEPC works to:

  • Develop and maintain plans for responding to hazardous materials emergencies.
  • Identify facilities and areas where hazardous materials may present a potential risk to the community.
  • Promote communication and coordination between emergency responders, industry, government agencies, and the public.
  • Support emergency response planning and preparedness activities.
  • Provide opportunities for training and exercises related to hazardous materials incidents.
  • Review and provide information related to hazardous materials reporting requirements.
  • Promote public awareness and preparedness regarding hazardous materials emergencies.

Community Right-to-Know

The LEPC also supports the community's access to information concerning hazardous materials that may be present within Alamance County. Federal and state laws establish reporting requirements for certain hazardous materials and provide mechanisms for emergency responders and the public to obtain information that can assist with emergency planning and preparedness.

A Community Partnership

Hazardous materials preparedness is a shared responsibility. Through cooperation among government agencies, emergency responders, businesses, facilities, and residents, the LEPC works to strengthen Alamance County's ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from hazardous materials emergencies.

The Alamance County LEPC meets regularly to discuss hazardous materials preparedness, emergency planning, community outreach, and related issues affecting the County.
