Our Mission: The Mission of the Alamance County Planning Board is to respond to needs of its citizens by providing leadership and guidance for the comprehensive, thoughtful, and orderly growth and development of our land based upon respect for our rich history, culture, and fairness to our citizens.

Our By-Laws and Meeting Procedures

The Alamance County Planning Board is an appointed advisory Board consisting of nine members. Planning Board members are appointed by the Alamance County Board of Commissioners and serve for three-year terms. Board members may serve for two consecutive terms, after which members are ineligible for reappointment for a period of one year. Diverse representation of the county is a priority of the Planning Board. To achieve this, no more than two members may represent any specific township. Responsibilities and duties of the Alamance County Planning Board include:
  • To prepare, review, maintain, monitor, and periodically update and recommend to the County Commissioners a comprehensive plan, and such other plans as deemed appropriate, and conduct ongoing related research, data collection, mapping, and analysis.
  • To facilitate and coordinate resident engagement and participation in the planning process.
  • To develop and recommend policies, ordinances, development regulations, administrative procedures, and other means for carrying out plans in a coordinated and efficient manner.
  • To advise the County Commissioners concerning the implementation of plans, including, but not limited to, review and comment on all zoning text and map amendments.
  • To exercise any functions in the administration and enforcement of various means for carrying out plans that the governing board may direct. To provide a preliminary forum for review of quasi-judicial decisions, provided that no part of the forum or recommendation may be used as a basis for the deciding board.
  • To perform any other related duties that the County Commissioners may direct.
